About

VEGO Travel is a small scale, boutique vegan travel company that schedules limited trips. It was created with the goal of bringing decades of vegan travel experience to people who want to just focus on traveling and not what their next meal is, people who just want to be in awesome places with other vegans, and anyone else who wants to eat vegan meals and see the world.

YouTuber Mic the Vegan founded VEGO Travel after realizing how awesome vegan group travel is. Mic has traveled as a vegan in not-so-vegan-friendly times and places starting in Peru and Ecuador around 10 years ago. He realized that with a little bit of planning combined with the amazing boom in vegan options that vegan travelers can enjoy incredible journeys while just being a person and not a worried vegan.

Why Travel Vegan?

Animals: The goal of being vegan is to reduce harm as much as is practicably possible so whether it is at home or on a journey across your favorite country, the less animal products that are consumed, the lower the impact of animals there is.

Health: While food on the road isn’t usually the healthiest in the world, choosing plant-based options will result in less saturated fat, cholesterol, and inflammatory foods consumed.

“Eating unhealthy animal products when traveling can really bog you down. When I was traveling for business in Peru with several colleagues years back I ordered first and made a plate of vegetables, beans, rice, etc. and immediately my coworkers who were going to choose a greasy meat dish said “I want to order that too!” because they knew it would make them feel better which was a top priority.” – Mic the Vegan

When you are traveling you want to feel good so that you can enjoy your investment and make happy memories of the sites and experiences that are in front of you. Not only does a long term vegan diet help you prepare for enjoying travel but eating vegan when traveling helps you feel up for the task.

Planet: While traveling often has a large carbon footprint, that footprint can be considerably lower when consuming plant-based products exclusively. This is true for carbon emissions, land use, and water use. In addition, vegan foods contribute to species loss less since meat consumption is ‘likely the leading driver of species extinction’ (Machovina et al., 2015). Climate Mission

VEGO Travel is well aware of the high environmental footprint of most long distance journeys. Because of this, we almost decided to not start a travel company at all. However, if we can offer travel that is more eco-friendly than trips that would be taken anyway then it is worth it to be a company. We understand that carbon offset companies can often be a scam, that air travel has a high footprint, and that preventing carbon release is a better strategy than attempting to offset later.

With all of these points in mind, we offset our emissions with credible companies that do ongoing monitoring of their carbon sinks. We also ask that travelers choose locations that are closer to their location of origin to lower their travel footprint since longer flights means higher emissions.
